To be successful in any game, you need a strategy. Whether it is a big online poker tournament or a small time ring game, the people who constantly win always have a strategy they follow. The players, who don’t have a strategy, simply bleed chips and lose a lot of money. In this article we will be discussing online poker ring game strategy for beginners.
A ring game is basically a normal poker game. It is not like a tournament where there is a set buy in and once you loose your chips, you are eliminated. While playing a ring game you can continue adding more and more chips to your stack and come and go as you pleased. Because of this, the dynamic of the poker game is quite different, and you will need a special poker strategy to be successful at this form of online poker.
Obviously like in anything in life, you have more chances to succeed if you have a plan. It’s not different for playing online poker. It doesn’t matter if you are just getting started at the $0.25/$0.50 no limit holdem table. Successful players always plan ahead, have a rock solid strategy and stick to it. Knowing the basic poker rules is not enough. If you want to play like a hooligan, that is fine but just don’t expect to make any money.
The strategy that you will play will depend on a wide variety of factors. These include, but are not limited to poker style (Holdem, Omaha, Draw, etc), table limits, limit style (Limit/No Limit/Pot Limit), amount of players at your table (full ring/shorthanded) as well as the overall table dynamic. Now, it would be impossible to address all these areas, this is why in this article, we will assume you are playing relatively low stakes no limit holdem at a full table. If you are not, the general guidelines below will still apply but you will need to make some adjustments.
To determine what starting hands you should play, you have to determine if the table is tight or loose. If the table is tight, meaning that players are only playing the best hands preflop and are folding everything below a pair of 10′s, you will only be able to play the best starting hands. Playing anything less in this case is equal to suicide.
If the table is playing loose and players are raising from early position with a 7-2 offsuit, you can play almost any hand you feel comfortable with. Suited connectors and low pairs should not be folded, if you can see the flop cheap but if people start raising and re-raising, throw away all but the best starting hands.
Also, take into account your table position when selecting your starting hands to play. As you get into later and later positions (closer to the dealer button), you can gauge the competition in the hand ahead of you and play some lower values starting hands, hoping to hit a big flop. As always though, if you limp in with a weak hand and get raised, throw it away. It may only cost a little more to see the flop but you don’t want to bleed away unnecessary chips.
Playing after the flop is a little more difficult. The main thing you have to do is read the players around you and learn their tendencies. After the flop, poker is less about the cards you hold and more about reading other players hands. It doesn’t matter what they actually have, it’s what you think they have. Simply playing your own cards is a good way to lose a lot of money. Thus, you have to be aware of what everybody else at the table is doing and make your decisions accordingly.
It is important to take into account other players pre flop decisions when making decisions after the flop. For example, if someone raised in early position and the flop came Qh, Ks, Ac, then they checked, they either have a big hand and are trying to act weak or are inexperienced and missed the flop all together. This is just one example but you have to be aware of things of these kind. Online poker is not about blindly putting chips in the pot when you have a pair of threes.
Playing after the flop is difficult. Giving advice on playing after the flop is even more difficult. The best tip for playing successfully after the flop is to just think, take your time and use your experience.
With a little practice and a lot of playing time, anyone can make a lot of money playing online poker ring games. All it takes is a little dedication and you can be playing high limit poker in no time!
